What helps my decision fatigue around food
As you may have read in my previous blog, My journey with ADHD and food, you know my decision-making around food has always been a struggle. But as I became a parent, I needed to find options that would help me make mealtimes easier, and I wanted to find joy again in food.
At the end of the day, I am tired and I’m done playing the “what do I want to eat game.” And once I put my daughter to sleep, it’s hard to stay motivated to make a real meal. So I started to look for different ways to limit the decision fatigue, but also give me easy, simple, and dare I say it, delicious, options to make for dinner instead of just throwing in the towel and eat a spoonful of peanut butter and crackers or eggs and toast.
That’s when I found meal kits and landed on homechef. Homechef meal kits were the best ones I saw in the market, and trust me the ADHD brain of mine went down a rabbit hole to look. They had the most variety of flavors but also options that played to my interest of either wanting to learn how to cook new foods or just needing something quick that I could put in the oven while we start our daughters bedtime routine and come back to a fully cooked meal.
Now that I’m using them, I’m finding myself excited about food again, which is honestly such a big deal for me! I scroll through menus each week with a limited number of meal options, instead of walking down the supermarket aisle and trying to figure out what I COULD make and then end up forgetting an ingredient when I got home.
The meals change every week, so it’s fun getting to try new things and if you don’t like the protein, you can swap it for one you do like instead. They have quick meals under 30 minutes, and my favorites are the oven-ready meals. Everything comes prepackaged, and with really easy directions to read, which for me is so important because with my dyslexia I forget things or mismeasure and I have yet to do that with these recipes.
Not to mention the food is really really good. Each night our choices are narrowed down to 3 or 4 options instead of 100. We’ve been doing it for several weeks now and to say we love it is an understatement. I feel empowered because I get to make food decisions and not feel intimidated by the process of preparing a meal. That’s a win in my book!
